Title: Thinking with Hands, Feeling with Feet
Author: Kanjiro Kawai
Publisher: Bunka Shuppan-kyoku
Year of Publication: 1981 (Showa 56)
I believe it is in very beautiful condition. There are no writings or markings.
This is a rare book that is not often found even in used bookstores these days.
Description:
Kanjirō Kawai uses the word "kōsaku-nin" (craftsman). It likely means a person who creates things with their hands. For a craftsman, whether it's pottery, woodwork, or any product, upon encountering a good item, they cannot help but first ask how it was made, regardless of when, where, or by whom. That is the craftsman's initial greeting.
Throughout all the writings in this book, the potter Kanjiro throws the question of "how" at each and every object. As a person of the hand, he deeply considers the secrets of its beauty. There are also reports of his explorations trying to reproduce that beauty with his own hands ("Kesho Toki" - Decorative Pottery). There is also a passage where he, as a potter, relives the history from the blue and white Ming dynasty ceramics to the birth of Delft pottery. Moreover, he modestly calls that passage "Kikigaki kara no Tōki" (Notes from Pottery) ("Yorandō Toki ni Yosu" - Dedicated to Dutch Pottery).
