Born in Kyoto as the eldest daughter of Yuko-sai, the 12th head of the Mushakoji Senke family of tea ceremony, and Tsuneko, her mother from the Omotesenke school. A pioneer of culinary research, Sumiko Chizuko, a tea ceremony practitioner and culinary researcher, introduced Kyoto's kaiseki cuisine and home cooking to the general public.

The featured confections include famous Kyoto sweets, those created by Sumiko Chizuko herself, and those that remain in her memory, accompanied by essays. The author, who was raised in a tea ceremony family, conveys her love for sweets. This book is an expanded and compiled version of the series "Okashi Saijiki" (Sweets Seasonal Chronicle) published in the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper.

The first half introduces various seasonal Japanese sweets, and the second half features recipes for 38 seasonal Japanese sweets (supervised by the Senchado Gakuin). From how to make bean paste to traditional Japanese sweets, including Sumiko Chizuko's original Japanese sweets, are presented with abundant photographs. In addition, it includes a color chart of sweets for tea ceremonies, the flow of sweets in tea ceremonies, how to arrange sweets for tea ceremonies, how to recommend sweets, and famous sweets from various regions divided by season.
