Museum-quality "Time Capsule" grouping centered on Ray O. Nelson (S 1/C), who served aboard the USS Atlanta (CL-104) during the final, high-intensity campaigns of the Pacific Theater. Unlike standard mass-produced naval prints, this is a hand-tinted 14"x20" memorial produced by the Liberty Picture Co. (Richmond, CA). CL-104 was a vital part of Task Force 38, participating in the Okinawa Campaign and the Bombardment of Muroran, and was present in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender in 1945.
The value of this lot is exponentially increased by the inclusion of the original 1940s Railway Express Agency shipping box and the factory order forms. The box is addressed to the sailor's family in Capron, IL, providing ironclad provenance that is nearly impossible to find 80 years later.
*Vibrant, period-correct colors on a large-format display.
* Features the Philippine Liberation and Asiatic-Pacific Ribbons.
Minor stains under glass...but
This really is a gem!
